Modern serial shows are not meant to tell interesting stories. Their entire purpose is to simply get you to tune back in. They don't care what happens when you leave. When the show is over.
I started to think about this during Lost when I learned that they were making mysteries without having any reason *for* said mysteries.
Battlestar Galacita did a similar thing. As did Game of Thrones, of course.
It's just a vehicle to ensure you keep signing up to the streaming service these days.
