Welcome to #WebcomicTalk, the bi-weekly #webcomic #fediverse discussion hashtag for creators! This week's topic is software. Two questions remain.

Question 4: Do you have a tip you can share for other creators who may be interested in the software that you use for comics?

Please be sure to boost the question and include the hashtag #webcomicTalk to help other #comic creators join in the conversation.

there are so many good tips and tutorials out there.

But there is one:
When you bought the licence for SAI1 you can download the rolling release for SAI2 (the dev calls it a beta) and apply that licence to it and it becomes a full version without limits.

That's intended by the developer. every update gets better and better. 😎 👍

@JoKeR @webcomictalk - Q4: GIMP is not an easy learn. I spent years learning it, and am still finding out new things ever year. But if you can stick with it, and can learn how to use it, it can work wonders.

@dolari @JoKeR @webcomictalk

Wow, what a great image, It looks so clear!

I've used GIMP for years, but am rather slow at figuring things out with it 😅

I had a few follow-up Qs, (if you don't mind, of course):

1. What size canvas do you use? I use a 2560px square, which works, but I honestly have no idea if that's big or small by other folks' standards
2. How do you do coloring? When I use the paint bucket it leaves a pixely line along the edges, so I just make a new layer behind my lines and color in with the paintbrush (can take some tiiiime)

Thank you!!

Thanks! :)

1) I tend to do all my comics at a 3300x3300 size per panel. After they're drawn, they're laid into a 3x2 grid in Scribus and the whole thing shrunk down to 750x525, so they end up pretty small. This specific strip was done more in a comic-book style, though.

2) Coloring is pretty much done with paint bucket, and then I use an extra layer to "tint" those colors depending on the environment (in this case, she's on a stage with pink lighting, so I use a layer to tint everything pink).

To get rid of those pixel jaggies when using the bucket fill, make sure that when you're marking out the area to paint with your lasso tool that antialiasing is off. That'll keep those pixels from "Fading out" on the edges.

First of all: that's a quality guitar you did and guitars are stupid hard to draw!

Also, hoooly crap, thank you! Just to expose how basic I am: I didn't even know you could use the paint bucket on a selection! 🤯 I just gave that a try and it will make my life soooo much easier!

I'm also gonna tuck Scribus into the back of my brain - I don't really use panels in my current comic, but it looks like a good tool for potential future projects.

Thanks again!
