Watching a TV Show on Hulu, and something just felt off about it. I realized it's playing too fast, for some reason. Turns out, Hulu is playing the European PAL version of the show (which are sped up by 4%) for some reason.

I wonder why they do that in the digital years, when all players can play all formats. Especially when it's not in the original broadcast format. (Maybe it doesn't exist anymore?)

@dolari A 4% speed increase is commonly the result of showing film stock at 24FPS on a "European" TV system (both PAL and SECAM) at 25FPS without frame rate conversion. In the 70s 4% was considered imperceptible to most viewers.

Problems arise when subsequent frame rate conversion from 25FPS to 30FPS is applied rather than the correct 24FPS to 30FPS. I remember seeing PAL to NTSC convertors with a FILM/STUDIO input switch which puzzled me enough to ask my father.
