@socketwench - I've never seen a straight answer to this, but just little bits and pieces, but Sal Mineo apparently couldn't handle the ape makeup. His death MAY have been writing out the character to release him.

Unfortunately, I don't have early drafts to see if Dr Milo had more of a presence in the final movie.
