@Orb2069 - I loved The Gong Show and still do. I never saw the movie, though. I've heard it's mostly outtakes the couldn't show on TV. We'll find out....

@Nezchan @socketwench - pretty much. The king and arduous task of making and remaking pitches for a Star Trek movie with Paramount continually rejecting them made them lock into the Phase II pilot when Paramount said the pilot is what they wanted in a movie.

The two main production disasters during filming were the constant ego driven rewrites between Gene Rodenberry and Harold Livingston and the original effects company failing to deliver a single shot after a year.

That we got a movie at all was amazing.

@socketwench - So if you ever watch this movie again...

In the 2022 Director's Edition, there are two scenes that aren't "real." They're dream sequences.

The first is when Ilia takes Chekov's pain away. The sound efects fade way down, and fade back as it happens. This is because it doesn't really happen.

The second dream sequence is....oh...oh, look at the time. I gotta run.

@wohali @socketwench - A friend of mine mentioned a headcannon he had of the Enterprise, as a single sperm, going through the Vaginal Canal of V'ger, and when it lands at the V'Ger site, ferilizing the egg.

Not my headcanon, but it sure as hell works.

@socketwench - Personally, the Memory Wall sequence, as written, is far more exciting than what we got in the film. But from what I've seen of the filmed sequences, they're not very good. The blame is mostly on Robert Abel's production company that created the sets. They looked great, sure. But for one shot. Any other shots that would have been made traveling through would have looked like...the same shot. The Trench was a simple curve. The Memory Wall was a flat crystalline wall.

Refilming the Memory Wall at the last minute wouldn't have helped the hokey look even with Doug Trumbull at the helm, so the production gave him a check and said "make it good." It's not as exciting, but looks a helluva lot better.

@socketwench - One of the effects folks (a woman) decided to add to this scene, by having the Wormhole trailing light effects tickle her breast. She was unhappy that Ilia's sexiness was relegated to one line of the movie, and added the effect because she felt it helped subconsciously sell her sexiness.

@socketwench - "We could have skipped so many scenes and landed right at the point Spock helps to repair the ship and relays his impressions of a distant, space-borne consciousness."

There ws a conscious effort on the part of the writers and the director to show that the Enterprise wasn't "happy" without Spock. The second example of this is the wormhole. Chillingly the first example is Sonak's killing. The idea being the Enterprise needs Spock there as much as Kirk.

Oddly, this scene exists in every draft of the movie with a slightly different take each time. Originally it was to showcase Lt. Xon (Spock's replacement) as not as "Seasoned" as Spock. He takes navigation off line to reprogram it, when suddenly an asteroid appears on a collision course.

@socketwench - One of my comments about this scene (Which was recomposited from the original film elements and corrected using a digital Enterprise in spots) was that only Doug Trumbull could make a studion model of a spaceship do a striptease.
