#OTD in 585 BC.
A solar eclipse occurs, as predicted by the Greek philosopher & scientist Thales, while Alyattes is battling Cyaxares in the Battle of the Eclipse, leading to a truce.
How exactly Thales predicted the eclipse remains uncertain; some scholars assert the eclipse was never predicted at all. Others have argued for different dates, but only the eclipse of May 585 BC matches the conditions of visibility necessary to explain the historical event.
If you live in the UK or USA, you need to understand one thing about the coming election:
You need to vote *defensively*.
Neither of the main parties are appealing. But if you don't vote for the lesser evil you may end up helping a totalitarian horror get elected.
Hold your nose and goddamn vote, dammit. THEN go on protests. Because if you don't vote for the lesser evil, the victor will welcome your protests with bullets.
The prize for political purity this time round is a shallow grave.

Thoughts Before Bed:
Okay, I wasn't sure I was all in on the more supernatural bent Doctor Who is taking this season, but "73 Yards" has me all in on how they're handling it.
There are episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation that the writers called "Wierd Shit" episodes. Where the Sci-Fi wasn't front and center, and instead they dove into the mystery of something odd happening to the crew.
Doctor Who's new direction is not the "exploring fairy tales" idea I got with the goblin episode, but genuine folk tale style stuff and attatching Trek's "Wierd Shit" mindset to it.
I'm in. I'm all in. :)
I've never been the biggest fan of 3D movies, mainly because they rarely worked for me in theaters. But watching 3D movies in VR gives a whole new life to 3D Movies.
I think it's because if I move my head, or tile my view, the 3D "sticks." It doesn't double vision, if I look a little to one side or rest my head on the headrest.
I may start getting them in 3D when I can to watch via my VR headset.
Here's a comparison of the ventral side of the 6-foot model (#StarTrekTNG's "Heart of Glory"⬇️) and the 4-foot model ("Final Mission"⬆️) of the USS Enterprise-D.
Abigail Thorn and Freddie McConnell were on Pod Save the UK's channel (recorded pre-election announcement) being interviewed by Nish Kumar and Coco Khan - discussing trans rights in the uk wrt the tories attempts to bring back Section 28 and the Cass Review.
Thorn makes a very strong point at the end regarding her desire to see not just the equality of self determination for trans people in healthcare but justice served on the level similar to the Infected Blood Inquiry to make people responsible have to answer for the deaths and failure.
