RIP Al Jaffee. 102 years is an incredible run. https://www.washingtonpost.com/obituaries/2023/04/10/mad-cartoonist-al-jaffee-dead/
Jaffee's work appeared in 500 of the first 550 issues of Mad Magazine. This includes a number of cartoons and most famously the fold-in, which he created. He retired at the age of 99.
I read a good line in a story that's helped me with imposter syndrome.
It said, remember that people are as a species used to living in groups of about 200, grouped around several campfires.
🔥Every
🔥Single
🔥Campfire
needs its own storyteller, its own dancer, its own musician. More than one, really.
So don't compare yourself to those who perform for millions.
Are you the person who can make people happy around your closest campfire? That's what's needed.
Alan Turing is widely recognized as a hero and a genius. He’s considered the father of theoretical computer science and AI.
But he was also a gay man whom the British government chemically castrated.
Turing killed himself because of the way his government treated him.
What more might he have done had he lived?
As this wave of hatred sweeps the US, I wonder how many gay and trans Alan Turings we’ve already lost, and how many we’ll continue to lose.
Texas' decent into Fascism continues....
i believe in the Users.
i believe in the Grid.
i believe that in there, in the Digital Frontier, is our destiny.
i believe that corporations, brands, and politicians have no place there.
i believe queer folk, trans people, internet weirdos and techies lay proper claim to the Grid, as we were its earliest natives.
i believe in our ability to use the digital world to improve the real world, and vice versa.
i believe in spite of it all. tell me why i should panic about the latest crisis and i will believe twice as hard.
we are the ones we have been waiting for.
so how do you feel about fanservice?
A: our collective childhoods have been strip-mined again and again in the name of endlessly regurgitating successful IP that drowns out whatever creativity was left in the entertainment industry, and movies that mindlessly feed us little bits and pieces of things we're already familiar with just to make us salivate on cue like Pavlov's dogs should be shunned by anyone who appreciates quality in their media diet.
B: *long, shuddering exhale, as if fighting back the urge to strangle someone* Listen, you...you cretin. You shell of a man. You wretch of an excuse of a human being. I live in the year of Our Lord Twenty Twenty Three, and in every. Single. DAY. some new existential nightmare is thrust upon me unwillingly, as if it were a flaming turd dropping from a great height directly into my morning's Cheerios. I have lived through a century's worth of crises in the last twenty years. My mental landscape would make Hieronymus Bosch projectile vomit. I have learned not to think too much about the future. I WILL THEREFORE PARTAKE OF WHATEVER GIVES ME SMALL AMOUNTS OF JOY AND SO HELP ME GOD NO DEGREE OF SHAME WILL STOP ME. I will suck the last drops of dopamine from any experience like a starving hyena slurping marrow from a bone. Have I, at last, made myself clear to you? YOU, WHO STAND UPON THE DUNGHEAP OF THE WORLD AND MAKE DEMANDS OF ME? BUT ENOUGH TALK! HAVE AT YOU! *frenzied screaming, wet sounds of rocks hitting meat*
(If your answer is B, you should go see the Super Mario Bros. movie right now. like, NOW. go, my friend. vaya con dios.)
A negative that's a positive!
@Momentrabbit glad to hear about the negative positivity!

New zine:
"The Fight for Gender Self-Determination—Confronting the Assault on Trans People"
https://crimethinc.com/zines/the-fight-for-gender-self-determination
Over the last three years, a wave of anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ legislation has swept the United States. Dozens of state legislatures are taking steps to prevent schoolteachers from discussing gender or sexuality—to force school officials to “out” trans kids to their parents—and to make it illegal for trans kids to get crucial medical care.
These initiatives target a vulnerable population that is already suffering disproportionately high rates of suicide, houselessness, and violence—all of which will be exacerbated by these laws. Understood as a whole, this constitutes a concerted attack on the rights to gender and sexual self-determination that LGBTQ movements have fought for decades to win.
Why is this happening now? What does it mean in a global context? And how can we fight back?
Please print and distribute these zines!
@dolari i hear the H.I.S.S. tank gunner is a pretty sweet gig.
