so as it turns out i might be pretty okay at pinball.
this is the second week of the league, and both weeks i have moved up a bracket, which is not bad for a robot whose main strategy is "keep the ball in play for as long as possible even if you're just gently juggling it back and forth between the flippers like a dork, eventually points will somehow accrue."
this is not to brag, just to chronicle something nice that is happening in my life.
what i don't get are the guys who slam their entire body into the machine and take out their frustration on it with the flat of their hand when it swallows a ball. it is not the machine's fault, Anger Boys. Gravity is a harsh mistress. be gentle to the machine, speak love to the machine and she will shower you with points. Blessed be the Bride of Pin-Bot. Z'ommmmm.
oh, and yes, there is a Dolly Parton pinball, it's real and it's spectacular. ⚙️

Cherokee nation lobbies for 187 year old promise for representation in Congress
#Cherokee tribes are lobbying the US Government hard to fulfill its 187 year old promise for a (non voting) representative in the US Congress https://www.politico.com/news/2023/01/10/cherokee-tribes-lobbying-congressional-seat-00077121
this is one of my many concerns (pol-)
see if you can find a pattern here:
* positive press drives engagement
* shameful acts and bad pubicity drives engagement
* bad publicity is automatically seen as good publicity by group A if it is perceived as making group B mad
* shameful acts are perceived as being either forgivable peccadillos, noble efforts, or unsubstantiated fabrications by the press if they are carried out in the name of pleasing group A or frustrating group B; regardless of real-world outcomes
and
* it is far easier to engage in shameful behavior than ethical behavior, since ethical behavior requires adherence to rules, thinking of others and considering the consequences of one's actions
*therefore* it is fair to assume that the vast majority of public figures are acting out of bad faith since there are few, if any, repercussions for their actions. the exceptions to this rule are becoming farther and fewer between.
statements like "at long last, sir, have you no sense of decency?" have no weight in the current context because we all know the answer is "no" and such an answer, expressed out loud, would result in a net loss of zero engagement.
we are knee-deep in stochastic war with an enemy who has surgically removed their ability to feel remorse or self-reflection; like a lab rat whose brain is hardwired to a big red button labeled "HATE" that jolts their pleasure center every time they press it.
how do we engage with people like this? how do we state our case, present our view of a better world for everyone? can we disable the HATE button? should we even bother?
more than anything, i want there to be an answer other than the one that rhymes with "schmilloutines in every public square" but my problem is i am just smart enough to quantify the problem and too dumb to figure out the solution and i really hope that someone, somewhere is furiously scribbling on a whiteboard and is getting REAL close to something testable.
I increasingly think that “freedom” is the most important word to take back from the fascists.
In rightwing hands, freedom often means
“no rules to allow billionaires to accumulate all the profits and power” or “privatize and destroy societal services” — schools to healthcare.
Real freedom is freedom from want, freedom to pursue happiness without worry about healthcare bankruptcy and with good schools for all.

Drive-in Saturday returns this January 14th, 9:30 PM Central.
intrigued? fascinated? repelled? indignant? outraged? kind of itchy? OF COURSE YOU ARE. shimmy up all in mah DM's if you want to come play.
Two years ago, on January 6, extraparliamentary Christian fascists stormed the US Capitol, dressed up in an assortment of antisemitic, anti-Black, and racist “live-action role play” attire—looking both ridiculous, thuggish, and euphorically full-of-themselves in their attempted insurrection.
This January 6, in expensive suit-and-tie and other high-powered professional attire, surrounded by neatly dressed aids, and with no need to breach their own office building, the US Capitol, parliamentary Christian fascists are engaging in an attempted insurrection too—refusing to install a Speaker of the House until they have someone in their pocket.
If January 6, 2021, felt unnerving and even scary, this January 6, 2023, seems much more frightening. As antifascist organizing has demonstrated in the past, such as via efforts like Anti-Racist Action, and more recently, in support of drag shows, it’s possible to get fascists off the streets—the kinds of fascists that went to DC two Januarys ago. Our #CommunitySelfDefense works!
Not that they don’t reappear at times, and not that they aren’t dangerous and sometimes deadly (increasingly so these past two years). And not that they don’t have relations with some of the trappings of the state, like cops. Yet they don’t hold the levers of a world power, with its vast resources and vast apparatuses of state violence/might.
As has been long argued by some antifascists, and rightly so, we are in a three-way fight.
As part of that, we are also far, far past “the fascist creep.” Two January 6ths ago, fascist ran up the Capitol steps and climbed over fences, but then walked around the building taking selfies and confusedly occupying the Senate chambers, unsure what to do—other than pray to their white Christian male supremacist god. Now, fascist congresspeople, having won their race, are confidently in those legislative chambers (not to mention Supreme Court) as superpower powerbrokers.
All to say, suit-and-tie fascism may prove to be much more successful at insurrection, bringing down the state from within.

Harrowing words from a senior emergency medicine doctor showing the despair at not being able to provide the level of care every doctor hopes to for their patients. Every doctor, nurse & HCW can empathise with this right now.

When you lay out the facts and stark reality, the power imbalance, the lack of real regulation or restraint, then the conclusion is that the only way we as a society can deal with this is something I'm not allowed to say or I'd probably be arrested.
