On this day, 15 April 1945. British troops liberated the Nazi concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen. Anne Frank had died there a few weeks earlier. My grandfather was one of the British troops. When asked, he refused to speak about it. He still occasionally had nightmares 50 years later on.

US trans politics, missouri trans healthcare recommendation :boosts_ok_gay:

Any missourians about to lose trans healthcare in the KC metro area, the University of Kansas hospital is right across the border and I can personally vouch that their trans healthcare team is amazing, they've had some ups and downs, but I was a patient with them from 2017 when they started the clinic all the way to 2022 when I left the state.

They do require a letter for HRT, BUT If you're already on hormones they'll help you stay on them while the letter gets sorted out. I hope this helps someone here :ablobcatheartsqueeze:

went into contemplation mode about what things will look like in thirty years' time that we lack the cultural foresight to anticipate, what i came up with was competing gangs of robots and cyborgs performing these intricate, choreographed flash-mob-style battles against each other in public, half-dance half-massacre, partially to intimidate the shit out of humans and push them out of the public square, and partially out of boredom

missouri, trans rights

Hi so I don't know if you heard, but an emergency order for my state is effectively ending all gender affirming health care

most see it as "some" or "most", but there's a catch-22 in there. you need severe and persistent gender dysphoria that can't be treated in other ways, but you can't have depressio nor anxiety

the stl trans community could really use your support right now! a few extra bucks could do a lot.

With the announcement of Missouri effectively banning trans medical care for all residents beginning the 27th, it is ever more urgent that I get help in saving my house from foreclosure (and make much needed interior repairs to make it more livable).

House is barely in the southwest Illinois suburbs of St. Louis, and most trans people I know locally are in Missouri, including 2 of my 3 partners.

I absolutely must help some of them get out of the state.

Share this with whoever you can. Remind some cis that there is absolutely things they can do right now to help with the growing persecution.

Missouri's executive order yesterday effectively banning trans healthcare for many ADULTS is a new escalation against our existence. Idk what all to do [total war against gender fascists is the simple answer] but I *can* help you blow off some steam by sending you some slaps to throw up wherever transphobes need to be scared off!

A STATEMENT OF INTENT:
the purpose of the Drive-in is to disseminate subversion, create community, and spread joy.
we live in a time of negative chaos and authoritarian nonsense. we are watching the Great Western Machine die from the inside, and its death throes are causing real harm to those we love. there is no accounting for the damage that those in power will do before they are stopped. it is little comfort to intuit that change is coming, because change is incremental, and inevitably arrives later than needed. Until then we must fortify ourselves.
how do we do this? by reminding each other that there is no such thing as a Perfect System. all things made by humans are imperfect and break when pressure is applied to the right places. laughter, pointed criticism and derision is one way to apply this pressure.
coming together on a regular basis as friends, comrades and lovers is another. we remind each other that we are not alone in this howling vortex, that each one of us is a source of light and strength for each other.
lastly is joy, which we need, which we deserve. we deserve joy even in times of crazy darkness, even when our little efforts and silly games seem pointless. it is joy that makes it all worthwhile.
the Drive-in is a haven for these things, if nothing else. it would be folly to declare our puny efforts to be integral. but speaking for myself only, when i read about the ongoing horrible shit going on in the world, i start looking forward to DiS--putting together the playlist, choosing the movie and the videos and putting together the interstitials and picking out the pre-show materials, hoping it makes those who attend a little happier, feel a little bit less alone out there. i look forward to seeing my friends.
i don't mean to inflate the Drive-in's importance. i don't mean to imply that its existence overrides the necessity of critical activism, which i need to carry out more of on my part.
but i want to make sure that everyone knows the intent by which i and others continue to produce Drive-in content. we are in this for the long haul.
DiS has always been, and will always be, a refuge and a place of kinship and love.
Long Live the Fighters.

i wonder of the "Transformers: The Movie" soundtrack ever gets tired of saving my fucking LIFE

RIP Al Jaffee. 102 years is an incredible run. washingtonpost.com/obituaries/

Jaffee's work appeared in 500 of the first 550 issues of Mad Magazine. This includes a number of cartoons and most famously the fold-in, which he created. He retired at the age of 99.

I read a good line in a story that's helped me with imposter syndrome.

It said, remember that people are as a species used to living in groups of about 200, grouped around several campfires.

🔥Every
🔥Single
🔥Campfire

needs its own storyteller, its own dancer, its own musician. More than one, really.

So don't compare yourself to those who perform for millions.

Are you the person who can make people happy around your closest campfire? That's what's needed.

Alan Turing is widely recognized as a hero and a genius. He’s considered the father of theoretical computer science and AI.

But he was also a gay man whom the British government chemically castrated.

Turing killed himself because of the way his government treated him.

What more might he have done had he lived?

As this wave of hatred sweeps the US, I wonder how many gay and trans Alan Turings we’ve already lost, and how many we’ll continue to lose.
