Since we had our first politics related stream recently, here's my stance on the overall topic.

Some cannot conceive of a world without corporate backing.

Some think they're somehow safer to linger in near anonymity as if that somehow protects them, or grants them reach, or influence.

It is, after all, the only world they know.

Let them go.
Plant seeds.
Tend gardens.

@mpuckett259 - Stretch it out long enough, and they'll often forgive the bill after a while.

Tom Kurtz, who co-invented BASIC—probably the piece of software that has meant the most to me—has died at age 96. When it turned 50 ten years ago, I wrote a VERY long article about why it was so important, and I’m very grateful that he helped with it. RIP. time.com/69316/basic/

@Alairthephoenix - I like Mastodon, but often find the lack of engagement discouraging (as well as the policing, which thankfully has died down). I rarely get any likes, rarely get any replies.

The vibe there is fairly positive, open and accepting (and in some cases too open), people are friendly for the most part, and the moderation tools are fantastic, allowing you to curate your feeds really well (and deplatform hate speech and bullying fairly well).

But I keep at it here because, well, I enjoy social media, and the people here have a different vibe than Blue sky (far more technical).

But I will admit, I prefer Bluesky to Mastodon.

Happy birthday to the amazing electronic music pioneer *and* transgender trailblazer Wendy Carlos!

sure sex is great but have you ever turned off an IBM PC AT by throwing the big red switch and been absolutely, supremely confident that all computing has now ceased and will not resume just because the operating system gets peckish for some midnight updates

Nut fact for 13 Nov:

There are two varieties of almond - sweet and bitter almonds. Sweet almonds are edible, but bitter almonds contain significantly higher levels of a compound, amygdalin, which can convert to cyanide when the almonds are eaten

@pandora_parrot - Babylon 5 proved serial storylines could work, but so many shows forgot the #1 rule of Babylon 5. PRE-PLAN IT.

I’m sorry but I’m not interested in election fraud conspiracy theories.

I don’t think that’s moving us forward. And I don’t think it’s a good idea to go down the same road of saying we somehow lost votes on the same ballots we won races on.

Pennsylvania, for example, has very secure elections. Nothing to be gained here.

You could go help someone who needs help or something instead.
