So I went to the grocer today to get supplies to make some apple pies, and when I got in line to check out, the cashier told me in an exasperated tone "I don't know how long this'll take. These people don't have enough to pay for their stuff and they don't speak a word of English".
I asked how much. $1.13. Their SNAP card was just over a dollar short.
When I used to work as a cashier, I was regularly a few bucks short at the end of the day for this exact reason.
I told them to just go have a good day and that I'd pay for their stuff. It was only $16 in total.
The indifference in society today makes me so sad. They needed food more than Safeway needed a dew more dollars of profit.
When I went to pay, the kiosk offered to have me round up or donate $5 to feed the hungry.
I think direct action made a bigger difference today.
Edit: to make the moral more explicit. I posted this so the next cashier who finds themselves in that situation might look the other way, or the next person in line might make it their problem *instead of* looking the other way.
"Your right wing uncle"
At some point, we white people are going to have to deal with the reality that it's not one distasteful outlier. Something like a third of your relatives want to dominate, harass, and hurt people; including you if you try to stop them. And another third is happy to go along with it, if it saves them from having an awkward conversation.
edit: anyway, merry christmas, and happy new year
This Week's Plain Jane Meal #1: Chicken Guillet
I've been showing you all my fancy foods, but really my "Fancy Pants" meals are just one of four meals I make for the week. Usually my first is just the bread I baked. And depending on what protien is in the Fancy Pants Meal I make some simple meals using Beef, Chicken or Pork, whichever isn't in the Fancy Pants Meal.
Today it's "Chicken Guillet" named after the first meal Lissa Guillet ever taught me, as it's super easy to make, and really good to boot. It's so simple, I'm not even gonna give you a detailed recipe. You just don't need it.
Grab some chicken (I use boneless thighs), add salt, pepper, paprika and cayenne pepper to taste (I tend to do 10 parts salt, 5 parts pepper, and 3 parts paprika and cayenne), and fry in a pan till done.
That's it. Simple, easy, and really tasty. I usually eat it with a banana or a side-salad because of my dietary restrictions.
Don't normally do this, but bumping this thread up to remind anyone feeling isolated over Christmas that you can find friendly people on the hashtag #JoinIn and the group @joinin
Even if you're with others, that can sometimes be lonely too, and you may be needing some escape. Or maybe you just fancy a random chat.
Whatever it is, you're not the only one, there are others who are up for a chinwag and this tag and this group are where you'll find them.
Take care everyone, wherever you are ❤️
Holiday baking, part 4: Cinnamon rolls!
Recipe from @dolari, half with and have without pecans. I left out the marshmallows.
Icing will wait until tomorrow morning when we reheat them to eat for First Breakfast along with Zoom call to family in Texas.
Just a heads up to any trans folks needing to get on Washington State's Apple Health care.
When you apply, there is an entry on the application (https://www.hca.wa.gov/assets/free-or-low-cost/18-001P.pdf) that specifically asks for your Sex Assigned At Birth.
Before filling this in, please note that Washington's Health Care Authority's Transhealth program (https://www.hca.wa.gov/free-or-low-cost-health-care/i-need-medical-dental-or-vision-care/transhealth-program) states that, unless you need reproductive care, you do not need to put in your sex assigned at birth.
Only if you need reproductive care are you required to put in the sex assigned at birth.
This caused some issues with my healthcare as all my physicians and pharmacists have me listed as female but because I didn't know I could put down female on the form, cause a ton of headaches with insurance, and a lot of phone calls to get that set right.

Was in Second Life and picked up a new green qipao to wear to replace my very very very old one.
When I wore it on my current brunette anime avvie, it was kind of missing something, and I realized it was my old red-hair. So I put it on, and sure enough, her red hair pops with the green silk. After putting on her old face, she kinda looks like a classy lady.
But then I thought - what if I put the redhead's old clothes on my current brunette avvie and...SHE'S ADORABLY TSUNDERE.
I used to work on microcontrollers and an alarming number of questions of the form "why is our codebase like this" have an answer that begins "okay so in 1981 IBM released the first personal computer..."
